It’s been a while since I’ve participating in the hop, but I couldn’t resist this week. Brought to you by Jennifer at Crazy For Books, the Book Blogger Hop is a fun way to get to know other book bloggers.
This week’s question: “If you find a book that looks interesting but is part of a series, do you always start with the first title?”
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY YES! I am extremely anal about this – I must read a series in order. I feel that one of the best aspects of series is the character development – you see them grow and have a better understanding of why they make some of the choices they do. I received a three books so far to review that are not the first in the series and I went and borrowed the books from the library before starting two of the review books. For the other one, I wasn’t totally sure I would like the series, so I just read the one I was sent (I think it was book four). It ended up being ok, so now I think I will be going back and rereading the previous books and maybe even reread the review book. I think I might have to add something about this in my review policy (something I really need to update!).
What about you?
Have to agree-I just can't start reading from book 2 or 3. Not that I have never done so though. But not on purpose! But it sure made things alot clearer once I realised why nothing was making sense when told I was reading from the fourth book….

Happy Friday! Most times I start at the beginning – only once have I started on the third book and that's just due to time restraints….
Hi Kristin!! I agree!

I am the same way with series books! I have to start at the beginning or I feel off!
Thanks for checkng out my blog. Yours is so cute! I love it!
Thanks for checking out my blog.
I've never started a book in the middle of a series before and it would feel so wrong to me. I agree with you about the character development. Although some series can be read as standalone books, the author still references things from the previous books.
I always have to start with the beginning! I just would feel lost without the background the previous books in the series build.
I am here from the Hop, Kristin. As I say in my post, I like to start with book one whenever possible as well. Have a terrific weekend. 🙂
Hi, just wanted to say hello 🙂 I usually start with the first book, but when I find out that it could be read as a stand alone I would read out of order…:)Have a good weekend.
I can dive right into the middle of a book series if the series' story
doesn't run chronologically.
That is to say, if each novel in a series is a stand-alone story (like Lee
Child's Reacher novels) then I don't feel the need to start with book one.
On the other hand, a series of books (like Richard Hatch's Battlestar
Galactica novels) can't be read out of sequence since each new book builds
upon the story of the previous entry in the series.
Happy Book Blogger Hop Friday!

Thanks for stopping by my blog, hopping back! If were sent books in a series that were not the first, I would definitely have to try and source the first one right away before I could read the others! I definitely feel that you gain more by reading a series in order. Hope you have a great weekend!
You make a good point about clarifying this in your review policy. When I did accept book 3 of a series I got books one and two from the library and read those first. I didn't think I could give a fair review without the proper background.
Thanks for stopping by! I am an old follower and always happy to stop by your blog and read your latest post! I hope you had a good day.
