Review: Now You See Her by James Patterson

First line: I’d already tossed the driver a twenty and was bouncing up and down like a preschooler last in line for they potty when my taxi finally stopped across from the Hudson hotel on West 58th.

Why I read this: It’s a book by James Patterson – enough said!!!

From the inside cover: To save her own life, Nina Bloom vanished. Now, to rescue an innocent man, she confronts the killer she thought she escaped forever.

THE PERFECT LIFE

A successful lawyer and loving mother, Nina Bloom would do anything to protect the life she’s built in New York – including lying to everyone, even her daughter, about her past. But when an innocent man is framed for murder, she knows she can’t let him pay for the real killer’s crimes.

THE PERFECT LIE

Nina’s secret life began nineteen years ago. She had looks to die for, a handsome police-officer husband, and a carefree life in Key West. When she learned she was pregnant with their first child, her happiness was almost overwhelming. But Nina’s world shattered when she unearthed a terrible secret that caused her to run for her life and change her identity.

THE PERFECT WAY TO DIE

Now, years later, Nina risks everything she’s earned to returned to Florida and confront the murderous evil she fled. In a story of wrenching suspense, James Patterson gives us his most head-spinning, action-filled novel yet – a Hitchcockian blend of unquenchable drama and pleasure.

My thoughts: I always look forward to the summer because it means a new James Patterson stand-alone book is usually released. I definitely wasn’t disappointed with this summer’s book. Now You See Her shows us how one small action can have a huge ripple effect in our life and the lives of those around us.

Nina Bloom does not want her daughter to know about her past – or anyone else for that matter. Jeanine goes on Spring Break to Key West in 1992 and runs into some real legal difficulties. She is saved by a very attractive policeman and this sets the stage for all the adventure and deceit in the book. It is good versus evil throughout. Eventually Jeanine becomes Nina and ends up  in New York City. After living virtually a lie for so many years, she is still running. Then a man dies and she has to decide if she wants to tell the truth or not. From New York City to Key West and back, this fast-paced story has you cheering for Nina/Jeanine right from the beginning.

Now You See Her is an exciting book with the usual short chapters we’ve come to love and expect from James Patterson. It also builds up to an explosive ending, and is filled with all the elements that make a thriller good: mystery, suspense, criminal activity and revelations about characters that you’d never guess. While I know this is a stand-alone book, I can’t help but hope James Patterson revisits the character of Nina in another story.

(I purchased this book.)

@Gigi Ann Thanks Gigi Ann. I love James Patterson – his books are usually super-quick reads and have tons of suspense and twists and turns that keep you guessing right up until the end.
