Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry her ideal man,
Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her “happily ever after” begins to
fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring in a hotel fire
drill but in the panic that follows, her phone is stolen. As she paces
shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can.
Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her
when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except that
the phone’s owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn’t agree. He wants his
phone back and doesn’t appreciate Poppy reading his messages and wading
into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and
unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each
other’s lives through emails and text messages. As Poppy juggles wedding
preparations, mysterious phone calls, and hiding her left hand from
Magnus and his parents . . . she soon realizes that she is in for the
biggest surprise of her life.

My thoughts: I first started reading Sophie Kinsella’s books when her Shopaholic series became a movie and I thought they were funny and light and quick reads. Since finishing that series, I’ve started reading some of her other books. They, too, tend to be funny and quick and light.

I’ve Got Your Number is in one word, hysterical.  Poppy, recently engaged to Magnus, has managed to lose her engagement ring and get her cell phone stolen all in the same day. Conveniently, she happens to find a cell phone in the trash and so begins her adventures. It turns out the the phone belonged to the PA of Sam who up and quit. Needing the phone so she can give a number to everyone looking for her missing ring, she convinces Sam that she will pass along all messages for him. Now, what do you do when you have in your possession a phone containing someone else’s emails and texts – you read them, of course! And that is exactly what Poppy does. She reads each and every one of them! From all their texting back and forth, Poppy and Sam forge a relationship, a connection that ends with each helping out the other in more ways than one. 

This novel is about two people meeting who otherwise might not have met, making their story sweet and poignant. And, like all of Sophie Kinsella’s books, it is also filled with humor – particularly with the use of Poppy’s “footnotes” – something she picked up from her fiance’s family. These add hilarious observations to the story and had me laughing out loud everytime she added one in. This book has a little bit of everything – humor, romance, a little mystery, some ridiculous antics, and some characters you will love and some you just can’t stand!

I have really come to enjoy Sophie Kinsella’s writing – she’s almost like a guilty pleasure. You just know you are going to laugh and fall in love with the characters. I’ve read almost everything she’s written as Sophie Kinsella and now need to try her books written as Madeleine Wickham. Do you have an author you would consider your guilty pleasure?

Audio thoughts: I thought Jane Entwistle did a fabulous job with the voices in this story. She gave Poppy her own unique voice and was able to add just the right emotion to her voice as needed. Even the use of the footnotes and the reading of the texts just seemed to work. I look forward to listening to more by this narrator.
