From the back of the audio case: Stephanie Plum,
America’s favorite bounty hunter, returns to the streets of Trenton, New
Jersey for another rousing adventure. With high-spirited sidekicks like
the bizarre Grandma Mazur and ex-hooker Lula, its easy to see why
Stephanie’s fan base grows every day.
While trying to make an honest
buck apprehending bond-skippers, Stephanie is shocked to learn her
mentor–master bounty hunter Carlos ‘Ranger’ Manoso–is suspected of
murder. Digging through the local weapons and drug rackets, Stephanie
hopes to get her man off the hook. But finding time for her other man,
vice cop Joe Morelli, is getting harder each day. And it doesn’t help
when Grandma moves in, takes up driving lessons, and dyes her hair pink.
New York Times best-selling author Janet Evanovich constructs
unforgettable tales filled with zany characters and non-stop action.
Narrator C.J. Critt takes listeners on a colorful trek through the sexy,
hilarious and hazardous world of Stephanie Plum.
My thoughts: Another great Stephanie Plum
story – this one with just as much laughs as the previous ones. There is
non-stop action and it is filled with eccentric characters – some new
and some from previous books. Picking up right where the previous one, High Five, left off, we find out just who Stephanie called to come over – Joe or Ranger.
This
time around, Stephanie manages another car fire, gets a new roommate
and ends up taking car of a dog. Grandma Mazur moves in with Stephanie –
Stephanie’s father is not quite over the fact that Grandma Mazur
stunned him with Stephanie’s stun gun. She is full of spunk and has a
list of things she wants to accomplish – get her license, get a car, and
get a job.
Stephanie
has just been given her latest bounty hunter job – find Ranger, who is
suspected of murder. She declines and the case goes to her nemesis,
Joyce. In the meantime, Ranger contacts Stephanie and has her do some
surveillance for him.
In typical Stephanie Plum style, Stephanie finds
herself being followed by some unscrupulous people, having a dog dumped
on her – a dog that doesn’t like being alone and eats everything in
sight – and gets herself shot. She also ends up with quite a few
late-night break-ins – and nothing she does seems to keep the guys out.
She takes Lulu along with her on some assignments and the two get dubbed
“Lucy and Ethel” – quite an apt description of the two. I’d say!
The
romantic triangle that Stephanie seems to find herself in continues to
simmer. Things seem to be heating up between Joe and Stephanie and there
are quite a few times that they find themselves interrupted before
anything can happen. Then there’s Ranger – there’s definitely a growing
attraction between the two but I’m just not sure if anything will ever
come of it…I guess only time will tell.
Audio Thoughts: I have really come to
enjoy CJ
Critt’s performance in the Stephanie Plum books and am quite bummed that
the series changes narrator in the next book. CJ Critt nails the whole
New Jersey persona, giving each character their own unique voice – so
much so that having listened to books 2-6 on audio, I don’t need to be
told who is talking because I know the person’s voice. The new narrator
in my opinion has a lot to live up to…hopefully I won’t be
disappointed!
If you listen to audio books, how do you feel when a series changes narrator?
