My thoughts: What I’ve come to love and now expect with a Stephanie Plum book is that there is going to be a lot of mishaps, a few characters will find themselves in some embarrassing situations, and tons of times I will find myself laughing out loud! Lean Mean Thirteen certainly delivers on all these fronts and more.
This time around the major case of the book centers around Stephanie’s ex-husband Dickie Orr and Stephanie is at first considered a suspect in his disappearance. As she begins working the case, she has to deal with her arch-nemesis, Joyce, always a step behind her. Along with this case, there are some other cases that Stephanie is working on, with the help of Lula, who always seems to bring attention to herself wherever she goes!
Ranger and Morelli have come to the conclusion that Stephanie is just an accident waiting to happen after she gets caught in yet another explosion. It’s quite funny how the two have come to terms with the fact that she needs looking after as she always finds herself in some type of danger – oftentimes at no fault of her own.
I love how Janet Evanovich creates two plot lines – the action line and the romance line – and then weaves them together. It keeps the story moving forward as each adds a bit of suspense to the overall book. I’ve loved listening to all these books and each one reinforces my decision that audio is the way to go with this series!
Audio Thoughts: Lorelei King does a really good job of hooking you into the series. Even though, if you’ve been reading/listening to the whole series, you know the basic gist of the story, it’s the emotion and humor that really make the scenes. Lorelei is able to deliver all this without making it seem too much.
