Title: The Supreme Macaroni Company
Author: Adriana Trigiani
Series: Valentine, #3
Published: November 2013, Harper
Format: ARC Paperback, 352 pages
Source: TLC Books Tours
For over a hundred
years, the Angelini Shoe Company in Greenwich Village has relied on the
leather produced by Vechiarelli & Son in Tuscany. This historic
business partnership provides the twist of fate for Valentine Roncalli,
the school teacher turned shoemaker, to fall in love with Gianluca
Vechiarelli, a tanner with a complex past . . . and a secret.A
piece of surprising news is revealed at The Feast of the Seven Fishes
when Valentine and Gianluca join her extended family on a fateful
Christmas Eve. Now faced with life altering choices, Valentine remembers
the wise words that inspired her in the early days of her beloved
Angelini Shoe Company: “A person who can build a pair of shoes can do
just about anything.” The proud, passionate Valentine is going to fight
for everything she wants and savor all she deserves-the bitter and the
sweetness of life itself.Romantic and poignant, told with humor
and warmth, and bursting with a cast of endearing characters, The
Supreme Macaroni Company is a sumptuous feast of delights: a portrait of
a woman and the man she loves, her passion for craftsmanship, and the
sacrifices it takes to build and sustain a family business while keeping
love and laughter at the center of everything.
My thoughts: My love affair with Adriana Trigiani began when I first came across her books Very Valentine and Brava, Valentine about five years ago. I read those two books and loved them and while patiently waiting for the final book in this trilogy to come out, I devoured just about every other book Adriana has written.
This latest book, originally supposed to have come out last year and to be titled Ciao, Valentine, was finally released this week and what a story it was! I will say I was a bit skeptical when I first heard about the name change – and it isn’t until you get about half way through that you even understand how the new title fits it, but that aside, the story itself is amazing, full of emotion and surprises along the way.
Valentine remains one of my favorite Adriana Trigiani characters, and while it’s been a while since I’ve read the previous two books, it was quite easy to jump back into the series. Picking up right where Brava, Valentine left off, I felt as if I was meeting up with old friends. The story takes place in NYC, New Orleans and Italy and once again it’s so easy to picture yourself right there alongside the characters with all the descriptive writing.
I love how Adriana really gets to the heart of relationships between some of her characters, for instance, Valentine’s Dad gives a lovely and touching toast on Christmas Eve about how he came up with Valentine’s name – it was so sweet I got a little teary-eyed! And then there’s Aunt Feen…oh what a crochety old lady she can be at times, especially when she’s had a drink or two. I just love all these wonderfully drawn characters…all dynamic in their own right.
My only complaint is that this is the last time we get to visit with Valentine, unless we reread the books, which now that all three books are out, I might just do so I can read them all consecutively. So much happens in this last book and while I understand that trilogies must come to an end, part of me feels that just maybe Adriana Trigiani left it so that she could revisit Valentine at some point if she were so inclined. What do you think Adriana, if enough fans begged for more Valentine, would you give us more?
