Format: Hardcover, 368 pages

Award-winning and Boston Globe
bestselling author Hank Phillippi Ryan presents a spine-chilling,
heart-wrenching suspense novel that explores a terrifying scenario
striking at the heart of every family.Does a respected adoption
agency have a frightening secret? Tipped off by a determined
ex-colleague on a desperate quest to find her birth mother, Boston
newspaper reporter Jane Ryland begins to suspect that the agency is
engaging in the ultimate betrayal—reuniting birth parents with the wrong
children. For detective Jake Brogan and his partner, a young
woman’s brutal murder seems a sadly predictable case of domestic
violence, one that results in two toddlers being shuttled into the
foster care system. Then Jake finds an empty cradle at the murder scene.
Where is the baby who should have been sleeping there?Jane and
Jake are soon on a trail full of twists and turns that takes them deep
into the heart of a foster care system in crisis and threatens to blow
the lid off an adoption agency scandal. When the threatening phone calls
start, Jane knows she is on the right track…but with both a killer at
large and an infant missing, time is running out….The Wrong Girl
is a riveting novel of familial relationships—both known and
unknown—vile greed, senseless murder, and the ultimate in deception.
What if you didn’t know the truth about your own family?
My thoughts: Wow…this is the second book I’ve read by Hank Phillippi Ryan and once again I found myself completely pulled into the story from the first page. I was very fortunate to meet Hank when she was touring for this book back in September and so I had some background information about the story which I think only added to my enjoyment. You can read about that author visit here.
This is the second book in Hank’s Jane Ryland/Jake Brogan series, although Hank does say the books do not need to be read in order. Jane is still trying to acclimate to life as a newspaper journalist rather than a tv reporter and finds herself in the middle of a rather interesting case. Her ex-colleague comes to her with the feeling that after meeting her supposed birth mother, she might be the “wrong girl”. While investigating the adoption agency, the trail connects to the homicide case that Jake is working on.
Let me tell you – the twists and turns this book takes keeps you turning the pages long into the night and the short chapters have you saying, “Oh, I’ll just read one more chapter,” until you suddenly find yourself at the last page. Quite a few times, I thought I had figured things out, only to have Hank throw in a new twist that completely threw me for a loop.
I love the chemistry between Jane and Jake and love how palpable the tension is between them – they know that a relationship between them is off-limits because of their jobs, but that doesn’t mean they don’t care for each other. Jake went crazy went he realized Jane’s apartment had been broken into; Jane went out of her mind when she heard about the gunman at the police station. Clearly one of these two needs to get a different job so they can be together!
The premise behind this story really is quite interesting and I remember Hank telling us that it is loosely based on a real call that came into the newsroom where she works. While the real case and her book are different, is just goes to show you all it takes is a little nugget of an idea for an author to then create a masterpiece of a story like this one. I cannot wait to see what comes next for Hank Phillippi Ryan – she is now on my list of go-to authors!
