In Laura Childs’s New York Times bestselling
mystery series, Suzanne, Petra, and Toni—co-owners of the Cackleberry
Club Café—are equally good at serving up breakfast and serving up
justice. This time they turn up the heat on a deadly firebug…As Suzanne is getting her hair colored at Root 66, she’s stunned to
witness the County Services office next door suddenly go up in flames.
Concerned neighbors throng the streets, and the fire department does
their best. Unfortunately, their best isn’t enough to save longtime
civil service worker—and friend to the Cackleberry Club—Hannah Venable.Soon enough, it’s discovered that an accelerant was used to fan the
flames. Someone set the fire on purpose—was Hannah the intended victim?
Suzanne, Petra, and Toni vow to smoke out the culprit.Unfortunately, the list of suspects is as varied as the Cackleberry
Club’s menu. When Suzanne finds a possible connection between the fire
and the nearby Prairie Star Casino, she comes to realize that the
arsonist wanted something very big and bad kept secret. And if the
ladies aren’t careful, they may be the ones gambling with their lives…
My thoughts: This is the 6th book in Laura Childs’ Cackleberry Club cozy mystery series and I really have come to enjoy this series. Each time I get to revisit these characters, I find myself wishing for a place like the Cackleberry Club – a cafe, a yarn shop and a book shop all in one place – that’s definitely my kind of place.
It seems that Suzanne’s reputation as an amateur sleuth is really getting around – she’s asked by a few people to look into the latest murder – the result of a fire. Was it an accident or was it arson? The victim was a good friend of Suzanne, Toni and Petra – making this case that much more personal and giving it a sense of urgency to solve. Of course, the murder investigation isn’t the only storyline going on – there’s the wedding of one of their employees that doesn’t quite go according to plan; there’s the county fair where Suzanne and Petra enter contests; and there’s the dinner theater that the gals decided to host at the Cackleberry Club.
While there is a lot going on in this book, it helped to keep the pace moving. Plus, we really get to see more about the gals of the Cackleberry Club themselves – their personal interests – instead of just them working and helping to solve mysteries. And, because this is a mystery book after all, it’s neat to see just how everything ends up tying together in some way and leading Suzanne to the culprit.
This has been one of my favorite installments in the series. It’s fun and the clues add up to keep you guessing until the end. I’m really glad I decided to stick with this series – just like the gals themselves, some things are better as they age!
