Last night I had the privilege of seeing Dorothea Benton Frank again. I first met Dotty last year at BEA at the Harper Collins Blogger Party and I loved chatting with her. Last night was the last stop on her book tour for her latest book, All the Single Ladies. I had already listened to the book – you can find my review here – so it was fun to go to the event already knowing all about the book. That’s not usually the case for me.
What was neat about last night’s event was the Dotty arrived early – 45 minutes early – and since there were already 5 of us sitting there waiting for the event to start (you have to get there early to get a seat!), she sat down and just started chatting away with us. Nothing formal, just talking about everyday stuff. It was so cool and she is so nice.
As more and more people started arriving, she opened up the floor to questions, but it never had that formal feel to it. When asked what her favorite book of hers has been, she said it was this latest one and in fact, she liked it so much, that she is already working on a sequel to it!!! Such exciting news as I really enjoyed this book. She’s also planning on writing a sequel to Plantation – now I haven’t read this one, so I guess I need to get to it before the sequel comes out. But she did say that she had been collecting redneck wedding stories while on tour for this book and shared some of the ones that she had gathered and boy oh boy are they pretty funny!
When asked what the impetus for writing this book was, she told us that she had been reading an AARP article about the Baby boomers and how most of them have saved less than $30,000 for retirement and that they think social security will save them. This got her thinking, how long will they have to work? At the same time, she also became interested the whole issue of medical marijuana and shared that the research of that whole topic was indeed quite enlightening. But, she was left with the question, just because something is legal, is it moral?
It was a fun night with lots of laughs and I am so glad I went. It’s always fun seeing authors on tour, and while this event wasn’t packed to the gills like some of the other stops on her tour, it was a lovely evening none-the-less. And, because I already have a copy of the book, you, my readers, will benefit as I now have 1 signed copy up for grabs…see below to enter!!!

Sounds like a wonderful event. I am new to her books but look forward to catching up.
I've only read/listened to her last 3, but have loved them – they've charming and funny, much like her!!!
I've enjoyed seeing Dottie on tour before, and she is a hoot! I missed her this time twice (she was in Myrtle Beach the week I had to be home, and in Raleigh the week I was in Myrtle Beach) 🙁
She is definitely an author I would go see again and again – it's just too much fun!!! Sorry you missed out on seeing her this time around 🙁
I think I have only read one of her books but I intend to read more and this one sounds great! How wonderful to have an informal chat with her.
Yes, I also plan on picking up more of her books and they are great on audio – so funny!!! She is very engaging with her readers/fans so it's a fun event if you do get a chance to see her!
Wonderful post, Kristin! The book sounds like a really good summer read. I will add this giveaway to my blog's sidebar.
Thanks Suko! It's a great summer read – funny and charming, with a little substance to it.
Sounds like a great event.
It really was…I think everyone there had a great time, judging by the amount of laughing going on!
I met her in St Louis a couple weeks ago as well. Same thing…..she was there early and made her way around the room to speak with everyone which I thought was pretty cool! I've read all of her books except the last 2 I think……..you bloggers have introduced me to too many new authors!!!
I think that's so cool that she gets there early and takes the time to chat with everyone…not all authors do that! I need to go back and read her earlier books. I feel the same way – have found so many new authors from blogging!!!
It sounds like a wonderful event! And I've yet to read any of her books but this one sounds particularly good.
Helen – I think you would like her books…they're funny and charming, but have a little substance to them.
Thank you for your great post and giveaway !
You are welcome!!!
I really enjoyed meeting her at the HC event – she was charming. My Mom and I are both looking forward to reading this new one!
