Author Meet & Greet: Dorothea Benton Frank (Plus Giveaway!!!) – GIVEAWAY CLOSED

Last night I had the privilege of seeing Dorothea Benton Frank again. I first met Dotty last year at BEA at the Harper Collins Blogger Party and I loved chatting with her. Last night was the last stop on her book tour for her latest book, All the Single Ladies. I had already listened to the book – you can find my review here – so it was fun to go to the event already knowing all about the book. That’s not usually the case for me.

What was neat about last night’s event was the Dotty arrived early – 45 minutes early – and since there were already 5 of us sitting there waiting for the event to start (you have to get there early to get a seat!), she sat down and just started chatting away with us. Nothing formal, just talking about everyday stuff. It was so cool and she is so nice. 

As more and more people started arriving, she opened up the floor to questions, but it never had that formal feel to it. When asked what her favorite book of hers has been, she said it was this latest one and in fact, she liked it so much, that she is already working on a sequel to it!!! Such exciting news as I really enjoyed this book. She’s also planning on writing a sequel to Plantation – now I haven’t read this one, so I guess I need to get to it before the sequel comes out. But she did say that she had been collecting redneck wedding stories while on tour for this book and shared some of the ones that she had gathered and boy oh boy are they pretty funny!

When asked what the impetus for writing this book was, she told us that she had been reading an AARP article about the Baby boomers and how most of them have saved less than $30,000 for retirement and that they think social security will save them. This got her thinking, how long will they have to work? At the same time, she also became interested the whole issue of medical marijuana and shared that the research of that whole topic was indeed quite enlightening. But, she was left with the question, just because something is legal, is it moral?

It was a fun night with lots of laughs and I am so glad I went. It’s always fun seeing authors on tour, and while this event wasn’t packed to the gills like some of the other stops on her tour, it was a lovely evening none-the-less.
