My thoughts: This is the second in the Maeve Kerrigan series and I really like this series. In this latest installment, Maeve is assigned to work with a new partner who basically tells her that he will be doing all the work and all the thinking and all she has to do is stay out of his way and just look pretty. Yeah – ok! What I love about Maeve is she is a no-nonsense kind of gal – there is no way she is going to take that kind of crap from anyone, especially someone she works with! The interactions between Maeve and Derwent were quite humorous as she put him in his place a few times.
The case Maeve and Derwent are working on at first seems a little cut and dry and then becomes more complicated about halfway through, thus making it and the story way more interesting and suspenseful. It became more twisty and suspect, keeping me on the edge of my seat.
On the personal side, Maeve is still trying to figure things out with Rob, who also happens to be a colleague. I like them together but am not sure I can handle yet another relationship that is going to go through all the angst of the whole off-again/on-again thing in each subsequent book as so many other series seem to do. I guess I just have to wait and see. Either way, I’m quite eager to continue with this series.
Audio thoughts: I really like listening to Sarah Coomes narrate these books. Between her British accent and Jane Casey’s writing – it’s a match made in heaven!!! The story really comes alive with the voices that Sarah gives the characters. I’m eager to continue listening to this series on audio and am glad to see Sarah Coomes is narrating all the books – this makes me very happy!
