One minute, Tegan Lawson
has everything she could hope for: an adoring husband, Gabe, and a baby
on the way. The next, a patch of black ice causes a devastating
accident that will change her life in ways she never could have
imagined.

Tegan is consumed by grief, not to mention her anger
toward Gabe, who was driving on the night of the crash. But just when
she thinks she’s hit rock bottom, Gabe reminds her of their Jar of
Spontaneity, a collection of their dream destinations and experiences,
and so begins an adventure of a lifetime.

From the bustling
markets of Thailand to the flavors of Italy to the ocean waves in
Hawaii, Tegan and Gabe embark on a journey to escape the tragedy and
search for forgiveness. But they soon learn that grief follows you no
matter how far away you run, and that acceptance comes when you least
expect it.

Heartbreaking, hopeful and utterly transporting, Come
Away with Me
is an unforgettable debut and a luminous celebration of
the strength of the human spirit.

My thoughts: There are some books that you know you will never stop thinking about…this is definitely going to be one of those. I devoured this book in one day and while it’s quite an emotional read, it’s a beautiful read and one that really makes you think.

I had picked this book up at BEA this past spring and had heard that it was going to be a sad book and to not read it out in public – boy did that prove to be true! By the time I finished the book, I was crying buckets, and while some of the tears were certainly sad tears, there were also happy tears there, too. This story is definitely a story about loss and grief – we learn that right from the beginning, but it’s so much more than that. It’s the way the story is told and it’s the message that comes from it.

I loved the way Karma uses the past and present to tell the story. The past is always in relation to “the accident” – how many months/weeks prior to it happening and this really puts everything into perspective. These chapters are interspersed with the present chapters and told at pivotal times, to give us a sense of the couple that Tegan and Gabe are.

The emotions that you will go through as you read this book will be like riding a roller-coaster. You will cry, you will laugh, you will be angry and then you will cry again. This really is an emotional journey and one that I definitely didn’t foresee Karma taking us in as we neared the ending, but boy oh boy, I will say I loved every minute of this book and will certainly be reading it again. Karma Brown has written a stunning debut novel and I look forward to reading more of her work.

This does sound intense and like quite a wild ride. It'd be interesting to see how such a horrible situation ends up getting settled if it ever can. I'll have to look for this one.

This looks really good, and when I read in the author bio that her work is compared to Me Before You, I am completely sold!

Okay, now convinced. Not one to listen to on audio if it is out on audio, nothing worse than weeping buckets while at walking.
