My thoughts:This is the second book in Carla Norton’s Reeve LeClaire’s series and while I haven’t yet read the first book, I have to say I enjoyed it this one. I am usually a stickler for reading series in order, however, I had this one and decided to give it a go without reading the prior one.
Right from the start, I found myself completely engaged and captivated in this book. As I mentioned, it is the second book in this series, but I never felt that I was missing anything crucial. We are given some of Reeve’s background story – enough so that I was able to get a pretty good picture of what had happened earlier in her life. Sometimes when reading series, there is so much repetition that it gets a bit annoying!
The characters in this book really come to life…they are so well-developed and really make the book! And while there isn’t a ton of action, when there is some, it is fast and heart-pounding, keeping you on the edge of your seat and anxious for more. There isn’t so much of a mystery to this book – we find out right from the beginning who is responsible – the suspense and the not knowing what will happen next is what adds to the overall tension of the book. This is just such a crazy, intense read!
I’m now torn as to whether to go back and pick up the first book – I really enjoyed this one, but I don’t know if I need to read the prior one – is it going to be too repetetive? Do I already know too much about what it is about? But, I do know that I would absolutely love to see more of Reeve LeClaire – she is a fantastic character and I feel like we have just scratched the surface with her…she has more stories to tell us. And I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for what comes next from Carla Norton!
Audio thoughts:This is the first time I’ve listened to Christina Delaine narrate a book and I really enjoyed her narration. She gave each character their own unique voice and was able to use just the right amount of tension in her voice when needed. I will certainly be checking out what else she has narrates.
