Summary:
When Eve Duncan’s
daughter, Jane MacGuire, becomes a killer’s target, Jane must team up
with longtime love interest Seth Caleb in this thrilling novel from the #1 bestselling author of Smokescreen.
Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan and ex-Navy Seal Joe Quinn are about to
give Seth Caleb their trust for the most important duty of his life:
keeping their daughter, Jane, safe at any cost. Her talent as an artist
has caught the attention of a brilliant psychopath with a violent past.
Seth,
Jane’s strongest ally and fiercest protector, is determined to keep her
out of danger, but that becomes nearly impossible when Jane is forced
to take matters into her own hands and confronts the madman who wants
her for himself…and wants Seth Caleb dead.
As Jane and Seth
chase down their blood-thirsty adversary, they also have to reckon with
their own epic love story. Can they finally commit to a life together,
no matter how uncertain? As the two come face to face with danger, one
thing is made clear: it will take both of them to confront and defeat
this evil.
My thoughts: It amazes me that at book 26 this series is still going strong, yet it absolutely still is. This is one of my favorite series to read – one that I started reading way before I was blogging and on bookstagram and I get so excited when I see a new Iris Johansen book come across my door. Yes, there have been some new characters, and new spin-offs, but the Eve Duncan series remains my favorite.
While this particular book focuses more on Jane, Eve and Joe’s adopted daughter, Eve is still involved and I’m ok with that. I love that we see Jane working here with Seth – these two have such a unique chemistry and she has been keeping him at arm’s length for long enough! Seth is such a unique character and I love that he is so fiercely protective of Jane.
This book is nonstop action and keeps you glued to the pages. I love how Iris Johansen gives so much depth to her characters – even the bad guys. And we even get to explore a little more of Michael’s special talent…a talent that along with Seth’s talent, does have you suspending a little bit of belief, but this is fiction and you just have to go with it. It’s not the first time either of their talent’s have been introduced, nor will it be the last, I’m sure. While I’m not a huge supernatural fan, I think both these talents add that little extra to the book to give it another layer without going overboard.
I enjoyed this latest installment and am hoping a new book will be coming out soon…please say this is not the last book!
Audio thoughts: I had the opportunity to listen to this book and what a treat it was. Elisabeth Rodgers does such a great job with the narration of this series. I had listened to earlier books in this series and picking up the audio of this one was like jumping right back in…she is so consistent with her voices -it’s amazing! Her pacing and intonation is spot on and she just infuses the tension and suspense into her voice so effortlessly. This was such a great book to listen to and I’m so glad I did!
