Summary:

Her own past could be a reporter’s biggest story in this twisting thriller about murder and family secrets by the New York Times bestselling author T.R. Ragan.

Plagued
by traumatic childhood memories, crime reporter Sawyer Brooks still
struggles to gain control of her rage, her paranoia, and her life. Now,
after finally getting promoted at work, she is forced to return home and
face her past.

River Rock is where she’d been abandoned by her
two older sisters to suffer alone, and in silence, the unspeakable
abuses of her family. It’s also where Sawyer’s best friend disappeared
and two teenage girls were murdered. Three cold cases dead and buried
with the rest of the town’s secrets.

When another girl is slain
in a familiar grisly fashion, Sawyer is determined to put an end to the
crimes. Pulled back into the horrors of her family history, Sawyer must
reconcile with her estranged sisters, who both have shattering memories
of their own. As Sawyer’s investigation leads to River Rock’s darkest
corners, what will prove more dangerous—what she knows of the past or
what she has yet to discover?

My thoughts: As soon as I saw that T.R. Ragan had a new series coming out, I began counting down the days until it was available. I fell in love with her writing when I devoured her last series, the Jessie Cole series, and after reading this one, I have a feeling I’m going to love it just as much.

One thing to know is that this book is dark and deals with sexual crimes. It’s probably not going to be for everyone. That being said, I found myself completely hooked right from the start. It’s chilling, disturbing and downright addicting and I had a hard time putting it down once I started it.

I love Sawyer’s character. She is feisty and determined. She has not had an easy life – her and her sisters suffered unimaginable horrors. They are doing their best to cope with the trauma from the past while trying to live as normal a life a possible. But they are flawed, damaged characters and it shows. I found myself rooting for Sawyer at every turn and while we don’t end up finding out that as much about the other sisters, I still wanted the best for them, too.

I also loved the group of vigilantes. This group of females who were denied justice decide to take the law into their own hands. They are determined to expose the men who raped them. I loved how we got snippets of their actions throughout the book and while I had my suspicions as to how this all related back to Sawyer, it wasn’t until the end that my suspicions were confirmed.

This book is filled with multiple plot lines that keep you engaged and flipping to pages to see what is going to happen next. I found myself completely hooked from start to finish and loved that the tension would be ramped up just at the right times to hook you even more. It’s a thrilling, dark, gritty read but one that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am definitely excited to see what comes next in this series…I want more of Sawyer Brooks!

Audio thoughts: I thought this audio book was very well done. It’s the first book Janica Damon has narrated and I thought she did a great job with it. She really brought all the characters to life, giving them unique voices and infusing just the right amount of tension and emotion into her voice as needed. Her pacing and intonation was spot on and I really hope she continues to narrate this series – I’m such a fan of continuity in series if at all possible!
