Summary:
When the game is
deception, nothing is as it seems in this novel of cunning psychological
suspense by the #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author of I’ll Never Tell.
Do you want to play a game?
Twelve
years ago Jessica Williams escaped a cult. Thanks to the private
detective who rescued her, she reintegrated into society, endured an
uncomfortable notoriety, and tried to put it all behind her. Then, at an
airport bar, Jessica meets a woman with an identical name and birth
date. It appears to be just an odd coincidence—until a week later, when
Jessica finds her bank account drained and her personal information
stolen.
Following a trail of the grifter’s victims, each with the
same name, Jessica gathers players—one by one—for her own game.
According to her plan, they’ll set a trap and wait for the impostor to
strike again. But plans can go awry, and trust can fray, and as Jessica
tries to escape the shadows of her childhood, the risks are greater than
she imagined. Now, confronting the casualties of her past, Jessica
can’t help but wonder…
Who will pay the price?
My thoughts: I
have become a fan of Catherine McKenzie’s books of late and this latest one was
no exception. She really has a knack for creating such thrilling reads
that pull you in right away and keep you captivated all the way through.
One thing I love about Catherine’s book is that every one is so very different. You never know what you are going to get when you pick one up and I absolutely love that. This one delves into the world of cults and I have this weird fascination with cults so I was already intrigued before I even started the book. And luckily, the book held up on that front – sometimes, the cult aspect doesn’t always work out, but here it totally kept me invested.
The other thing I loved about this book is that it really kept me guessing. Every time I thought I had things worked out, something would happen that would turns things around. The twists and turns that this book takes really keeps you on your toes. Between the revelations that we learn from Jessica’s time in the cult and the scam on her identity, this book really keeps you thinking!
I’m always a fan of a good old cat and mouse game, but Catherine McKenzie really turns things upside down here. She manages to take a simple revenge story and make it so thrilling and entertaining that you just cannot help but go along for the ride. This is why I love her books so much and I cannot wait to see what story she creates for us next!
Audio thoughts: Julia Whelan is one of my favorite narrators so I was so happy to see that she was narrating this book. She does a fantastic job bringing this book to life, giving each character their own unique voice and infusing just the right amount of tension and suspense into her voice as needed. Her pacing and intonation were spot on. I almost didn’t want the book to end!
