Summary:
DI Kate Young can’t trust anybody. Not even herself.
In the bleak countryside around Blithfield Reservoir, a serial murderer and rapist is leaving a trail of bloodshed. His savage calling card: the word ‘MINE’ carved into each of his victims.
DI Kate Young struggles to get the case moving – even when one of the team’s own investigators is found dead in a dumpster. But Kate is battling her own demons. Obsessed with exposing Superintendent John Dickson and convinced there’s a conspiracy running deep in the force, she no longer knows who to trust. Kate’s crusade has already cost her dearly. What will she lose next?
When her stepsister spills a long-buried secret, Kate realises she’s found the missing link – now she must prove it before the killer strikes again. With enemies closing in on all sides, she’s prepared to do whatever it takes to bring them down. But time is running out, and Kate’s past has pushed her to the very edge. Can she stop herself from falling?
My thoughts:
Carol Wyer is one of my favorite crime fiction writers and I am just loving this latest series. This book is the second installment in her Detective Kate Young series. She has this knack for creating such unique, leading female characters and I am totally for it!
I love how these books are so much more than just straight-forward police procedurals. Not that I don’t enjoy them, but there is a perfect balance of the procedural and character development. We are really getting to know Kate just as much as we are getting to see her work her cases and boy, was this case she was working was a doozy!
Kate is such a complex, complicated character. I like that slowly the layers are being peeled back as we learn more about her. I love that she talks everything through with her husband…these conversations might make her seem a little unstable, but I think they show just how human she is.
A serial rapist and murderer is on the attack, leaving quite the interesting calling card when he is done. Found etched onto the bodies is the word “mine.” As in the first book, the attacks take place off-the-page, so we only see the aftermath. Yes, the book is still gruesome as the team must deal with these horrific crimes, but we don’t have to see the acts taking place, for which I am grateful.
There are some chilling chapters by the rapist/murder and I always find these to be so insightful yet eerie at the same time. I love being in the head of a psychopath, as crazy as that sounds, because it gives the overall story such an ominous feel. And I love trying to work out just who it is.
I am really loving this book and am quite curious to see where it goes next. Kate is determined to bring down the corruption scandal she has uncovered and I can’t wait to see how that all plays out. Will it happen in the next book or will it play out over the course of a long series? Either way, I’m all in!!!
Audio thoughts:
I was very happy to see that Henrietta Meire was back to narrate this book. She had narrated the first one in this series and so it was great that there was consistency there. Her voices and pacing were just right and I thought this book lent itself perfectly to audio. I do hope she will stick around for the rest of the series…I love when it’s the same narrator all the way through!
