Summary:
The repercussions of an illicit affair unfold in this short story by bestselling author Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Dear stranger…
A desperate young woman in Southern California sits down to write a letter to a man she’s never met – a choice that will forever change both their lives.
My heart goes out to you, David. Even though I do not know you…
The correspondence between Carrie Allsop and David Mayer reveals, piece by piece, the painful details of a devastating affair between their spouses. With each commiserating scratch of the pen, they confess their fears and bare their souls. They share the bewilderment over how things went so wrong and come to wonder where to go from here.
Told entirely through the letters of two comforting strangers and those of two illicit lovers, Evidence of the Affair explores the complex nature of the heart. And ultimately, for one woman, how liberating it can be when it’s broken.
My thoughts:
I have only read two books by Taylor Jenkins Reid – The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (absolutely loved it!!!) and Malibu Rising (enjoyed it!), and as I make my way through her backlist, I decided to start give this short story a try…and I loved it!
First, it’s told through letters and I love epistolary stories…The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society book is one of my all-time favorite books ever and I’ve read it multiple times. But back to this one…it’s amazing that with a short story, this author was able to not only grab my attention but also make this feel like a full-length novel. I was completely engaged from start to finish, emotionally involved with the characters, and I didn’t see the ending coming – that twist totally took me by surprise!
I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I definitely recommend giving this one a shot. I listened to it and it’s narrated by a full cast, which I loved. But I’m sure just reading it would be equally enjoyable.
Audio thoughts:
I loved that this was narrated by a full cast. All four narrators, Julia Whelan, George Newbern, James Daniels, Dara Rosenberg, helped to make this short story come to life and coming in at just a little over an hour, it really pulled me right in. I was completely captivated by the letters and swept up in the magic of the story and didn’t want it to end. I loved everything about it!
I enjoyed this audio so much !
