Summary:

Just when you think you’ve reached the bottom…

Ryan DeMarco would rather not go home. Not now, maybe not ever. But when his estranged wife attempts suicide, he has no choice but to return to western Pennsylvania, and all the memories that wait for him there. Unfortunately, it’s not only ghosts from the past waiting to greet DeMarco upon his return. An old high school classmate has risen through the ranks to become a county sheriff, and he is desperate for help investigating a series of murders that might tie into a cold case from his and DeMarco’s school days.

DeMarco and his new love, Jayme, agree to join the team working on the case. But it’s not easy for DeMarco to be walking the streets of his troubled past, and the deeper he and Jayme dig into the disturbing murders the less likely it is that either one of them will escape the devastation.

My thoughts:

This is the third book in the Ryan DeMarco mystery series and I really like these books. I somehow got a little behind on this series – book 4 came out last year and book 5 is due out later this summer, so I am doing my best to catch up and luckily I was able to find the audio of this one at the library. I seem to get through audiobooks faster these days for some reason!

I really like that these books are more character-driven than plot-driven. Even though they are mysteries for some reason, it just works. This latest installment delves more into Ryan and Jayme’s relationship and it is not without it’s bumps. I love that this book is told by three points of view Ryan, Jayme and the killer. We really get more insight into both Ryan and Jayme this way, giving us more insight into both their histories.

Of course, I always love when we get the point of view of the killer. It’s always chilling, to say the least, and this one really stumped me as to who it was. I did not see it coming when the reveal came…which for someone who reads a ton of mysteries and thrillers is good! I love when I am stumped!

I will say, there are a lot of references to the previous two books, so for those who have not read them, just be warned. I always recommend reading a series in order. Yes, the author does give some backstory, but you are always better off reading the entire book(s) to have the complete picture of what is being referenced.

There were some interesting developments at the end of this book and I cannot wait to see what that means going forward…so glad I already have the next book on hand!

Audio thoughts:

I was able to grab this audiobook from the library and I enjoyed listening to it. It’s the type of book that translates well onto audio and the narrator – Graham Winton – did a great job with the voices. He’s a new-to-me narrator, but I will definitely be checking out what else he narrates…and hoping that he narrates the next book as I might be listening to that one if I can get it from the library as well! I’m such a fan of consistency with narrators in series.
