Summary:

From the author of The Blind comes an electrifying story of deception, duplicity and suspense

Peter Caine, a cutthroat Manhattan defense attorney, is extremely adept at his job. On the surface, he is charming and handsome, but inside he is cold and heartless. A sociopath practically incapable of human emotions, he has no remorse when he fights to acquit murderers, pedophiles and rapists. When Charlie Doyle, the daughter of the Manhattan DA–and Peter’s former lover–is murdered, Peter’s world is quickly sent into a tailspin as the DA, a professional enemy of Peter’s, embarks on a witch hunt to avenge his daughter’s death, stopping at nothing to ensure Peter is found guilty of the murder.

Peter sets out to prove his innocence, and as he pieces together his defense, he finds that it’s those closest to us who are capable of the greatest harm.

My thoughts:

This is the second book I’ve read by A.F. Brady and I am definitely a fan.

It takes a clever writer to craft a character that is so despicable, yet you still want to read an entire book about him because that is exactly what we have here. Peter is a high-functioning sociopath, and the entire story is told from his point of view. He was a good person at one point, but circumstances changed that and boy does this make for some cringey reading at times. Talk about a man with no empathy! But for some reason, I just could not put this book down. I needed to see what he was going to do and what would happen – I was completely captivated by the writing and that is all due to the skills of A.F. Brady. She crafted such a compelling story that even though I hated Peter with a passion, I needed to see this book through to the resolution…and I loved how each chapter ended with little cliff-hangers that just kept me totally hooked. The story alternates back and forth between the past and the present, giving us just enough backstory to set the scene and while it does provide some clues, I was still blindsided by the final reveal.

I really enjoyed this book and loved that it was a quick one – I devoured it in one day. I’m hoping A.F. Brady has a new book out soon – I need more of her writing!!!
