Summary:

Following the success of Murder on the Orient Express, Kenneth Branagh returns to direct and star in this adaptation of the classic Hercule Poirot mystery for the big screen, also starring Gal Gadot.

Beloved detective Hercule Poirot embarks on a journey to Egypt in one of Agatha Christie’s most famous mysteries, Death on the Nile.

The tranquility of a cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything . . . until she lost her life.

Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet in this exotic setting nothing is ever quite what it seems.

My thoughts:

I read this back in 2020, but decided to reread it for two reasons – one, being that it was the book selected for this month’s prompt for the #ReadChristie22 – a book ‘featuring travel and romance’; and two, being that the new movie was finally released and I’d really like to go see it. This time around, though, I went the audio route and it was such a great listen!

I can’t get over how much I am enjoying each and every one of these Christie books. And even though I have read this one before, I have read so many other books since then that I forgot the little details that make this one so good – all those secrets and hidden agendas really come into play, and nothing is unnecessary here. I cannot get over just how clever and intricate this plot really is. I loved the intricate twists and turns that this book takes and am such a fan of locked-room mysteries and this one is the ultimate – being on a ship when a murder occurs means there is literally nowhere to go!

I had fun picking this one up again and love being with Detective Poirot and Colonel Race again. Now that I have read a few other books since my first time reading this, I am more familiar with Colonel Race, having just recently read The Man in the Brown Suit in which he is first introduced. At some point I’d like to read these books in order and so I have been collecting these books, but who knows when that will happen!

Check back next month to see what Agatha Christie book I read next! In the meantime, let me know if you’ve read any of her books.

My original review

Audio thoughts:

Because I had already read this one, I decided to go the audio route and I really enjoyed listening to it. I grabbed whatever was available from the library, so it wasn’t the most recently recorded version, but I enjoyed it just the same. David Suchet narrates it and I thought he did a great job bringing the story to life. He gave each of the characters their own voice and his accents and intonation were spot on.
