Summary:

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why — or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man’s touch — and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he’s determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather’s last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

My thoughts:

I am totally late coming to this series, but thanks to a buddy read, I finally got the push I needed to get to it. And if this first book is anything to go by, I think I will be in for quite the treat – I really enjoyed this one!

This book has definitely got a total Knives Out vibe with a YA feel to it, which I loved. It also reminded me a bit of The Westing Game, which I loved reading when I was young. I loved the clever riddles and puzzles that this book presented – I felt it added a level of complexity to the overall mystery and kept me very engaged in the story. I also loved that I never knew where the story was headed and never quite felt that I trusted anyone which kept me on my toes throughout the story. And I definitely did not see that big reveal coming at the end!

I am looking forward to continuing on with this series and chatting about each book as I read them…it’s such a fun way to make my way through the series and adds another level of enjoyment to the books.

Audio thoughts:

This was a fun book to listen to and I thought Christine Moreau did a great job with this narration. I’m glad to see that she will be narrating all the books as I do plan on listening to them all and I love when there is consistency with narrators in a series when it makes sense to do so.

Books in this series:

  1. The Inheritance Games
  2. The Hawthorne Legacy
  3. The Final Gambit
  4. The Brothers Hawthorne – due out August 2023

An unusual story. I just read a Book where to inherit four people had to follow puzzles and clues.
