Summary:

When a young woman washes ashore on a Fort Lauderdale beach, Sloan McPherson of the Underwater Investigation Unit is called in to consult. Sloan’s instinct says murder, but even then, there are too many questions.

For answers she reaches out to Gwen Wylder. The Miami homicide detective is notorious for being manipulative, bitter, a tyrant to her peers, and wicked smart. And she demands something in return from Sloan: fresh insight into seemingly unrelated cold-case murders and disappearances—and a possible serial killer trolling the Florida coast.

As loose ends of the old files begin to come together, another woman disappears. Sloan and Gwen are certain she’s the newest link in a deadly chain. They are determined to track her down before she dies, but they soon find themselves in uncharted waters. And the deeper Sloan and Gwen go, the stranger the case gets.

My thoughts:

This is the fourth book in Andrew Mayne’s Underwater Investigation Unit series and I cannot get enough of this series. I first became a fan of this author when I read his Jessica Blackwood series and now this latest series is proving to be just as fun and captivating.

This latest installment finds Sloan involved in cold cases – which as you know, I love cold case mysteries, so I was totally all in. My only complaint is that there wasn’t too much underwater diving involved! But, we did get to see Sloan use a pretty neat tool that helped her investigate some murky waters so that she didn’t have to. If there is one thing I can say about this series it is that Sloan has gone through some pretty major character development over the course of these four books and I’m all for it! Her showing restraint in not jumping in the water was pretty major!

While I do miss the UIU team working together – you really have to read the whole series to know why they are disbanded at the moment – I loved that Sloan gets paired up with Gwen Wylder here. Gwen is quite the character and I found that Sloan really could hold her own with her. They find themselves in some tricky situations while investigating these cold cases, which really isn’t too out of the norm for Sloan, but a few times I did find myself holding my breath, not really sure how they would manage to get themselves out.

I flew through this book, as I have with all the books in this series and that ending leaves me hopeful that there is another book on the horizon…at least that’s the way I am taking it! Please let that be the case!!!
