Summary:

The number-one New York Times best-selling author and Queen of Suspense launched her career with this classic thriller following a woman whose past holds a terrible secret.

Nancy Harmon long ago fled the heartbreak of her first marriage, the macabre deaths of her two little children, and the shocking charges against her. She changed her name, dyed her hair, and left California for the windswept peace of Cape Cod. Now remarried, she has two more beloved children, and the terrible pain has begun to heal – until the morning when she looks in the backyard for her little boy and girl and finds only one red mitten. She knows that the nightmare is beginning again….

My thoughts:

With the news that a follow-up to this iconic book coming out, I knew I had to reread this one, the book that started Mary Higgins Clark’s career…and I’m so glad I did. I read this one so long ago – way before I started blogging – and I loved it just as much the second time around.

This book completely captivated me from start to finish, and while I am not a mother, I have many nieces and nephews, so I could only imagine that pain and feeling of helplessness that Nancy was going through and to think that this is the second time this has happened to her!

For a book that was originally written in 1975, this book really stands up pretty well. As you know, I read a ton of thrillers and mysteries, I found myself on the edge of my seat with this one. It was fast-paced, with the suspense steadily building throughout the book. And I loved that we get multiple points of view. I found myself quite suspicious of many of the characters, but never once did I figure out who was ultimately behind everything.

I’m so glad I picked this one up…it made reading the follow-up, Where Are the Children Now? a much more satisfying read…and stay tuned for that review coming up soon! But it also left me wanting to reread all of MHC’s other books…definitely something to put on my list for reading ideas!

Audio thoughts:

Of course, I listened to this one and seeing that January LaVoy was narrating it just made it all the better – she is one of my favorite narrators and she brought her A-game to this audiobook. Her pacing and intonation were spot on and I found myself completely captivated and unable to put this one down once I started it.
