Summary:

Keeping her secret may save her family.

But telling it may save her life.

Arabella Lane, senior executive at a children’s publisher, is found dead in the Thames on a frosty winter’s morning after the office Christmas party. No one is sure whether she jumped or was pushed. The one person who may know the truth is the newest employee at Parker & Lane – the office temp, Eleanor.

Eleanor has travelled to London to escape the repercussions of her traumatic childhood in outback Australia, but now tragedy seems to follow her wherever she goes. To her horror, she has no memory of the crucial hours leading up to Arabella’s death – memory that will either incriminate or absolve her.

As Eleanor desperately tries to remember her missing hours and uncover the events of that fateful night, her own extended family is dragged further into the dark, terrifying terrain of blame, suspicion and guilt.

Caught in a crossfire of accusations, Eleanor fears she can’t even trust herself, let alone the people around her. And soon, she’ll find herself in a race against time to find out just what happened that night – and discover just how deadly some secrets can be.

My thoughts:

I picked this up on a whim during one of the Barnes and Noble hardcover sales a few years ago. It caught my interest when I scanned the summary and I’m glad I got it. It was a quick read and I always love discovering new-to-me authors.

I always enjoy a book that deals with memory and I felt this one does such a good job with that. It really made me just as crazy as Eleanor trying to figure out what really happened that night and wondering if she really would get her memories back. Having the story the move back and forth in time works well and kept me interested, though at times it did feel like it dragged just a bit.

The book always shows how damaging secrets can be to a family and I enjoyed the way the author played around with this. Eleanor has a traumatic past that she ran from and we are slowly given the story as to what happened. There are also secrets having to do with the current situation and that makes things interesting.

Overall, I liked this book. The twists and turns it took kept me guessing and I found myself engaged and trying to see where it was heading. I am glad to see that Sara Foster has quite a list of books already out – I definitely plan on reading more by her!
