Summary:
The instant #1 New York Times bestselling mystery and Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick that’s captivated more than a million readers about a woman searching for the truth about her husband’s disappearance…at any cost.
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers: Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.
As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered; as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss; as a US Marshal and FBI agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.
Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth, together. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they are also building a new future. One neither Hannah nor Bailey could have anticipated.
My thoughts:
I had listened to this when it first came out and really enjoyed it. I recently re-read it when my IRL bookclub, comprised of friends in my town, picked it and I was so glad we selected this one. There is just so much to unpack and discuss with this book.
Now having read this one two times, I have to say I loved it even more the second time around. I really felt for Hannah and think she is such a strong character. What she is made to go through in this book is unfathomable, yet she never thinks about walking away. I loved that we get her inner monologue as she tries to process all that is going on. I can’t even begin to imagine what I would do if I were in her shoes.
It’s so easy to get emotionally invested in the relationships we are privy to in this book – be it that between Hannah and Owen or Hannah and Bailey. And even though this is a thriller, which I definitely think at times it is, it is so much more than that. There is such a depth to this one and I cannot recommend it enough. It’s about how far we are willing to go for those we love. Once again, I found myself on the edge of my seat reading this one – even though I had read it before…that’s how good it is.
I haven’t yet seen the TV adaptation of this book, but I definitely plan to soon. But I do really recommend picking up the book if you haven’t already.
Audio thoughts:
Once again, I listened to this one and I really think this one is just made for audio. The narrator, Rebecca Lowman, does such a phenomenal job bringing this story to life. I found myself completely engaged in the story and was able to listen to it in just one day!
