Summary:

New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter brings back Will Trent and Sara Linton in this superb and timely thriller full of devious twists, disturbing secrets, and shocking surprises you won’t see coming.

A mysterious kidnapping

On a hot summer night, a scientist from the Centers for Disease Control is grabbed by unknown assailants in a shopping center parking lot. Vanished into thin air, the authorities are desperate to save the doctor.

A devastating explosion

One month later, the serenity of a sunny Sunday afternoon is shattered by the boom of a ground-shaking blast—followed by another seconds later. One of Atlanta’s busiest and most important neighborhoods —the location of Emory University, two major hospitals, the FBI headquarters, and the CDC—has been bombed.

A diabolical enemy

Medical examiner Sara Linton and her partner Will Trent, an investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, rush to the scene—and into the heart of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to destroy thousands of innocent lives. When the assailants abduct Sara, Will goes undercover to save her and prevent a massacre—putting his own life on the line for the woman and the country he loves.

My thoughts:

This is the 9th book in the Will Trent series and I think one of the most intense to date. Having read all of these books this year, I feel so connected to these characters, much more so than I think I would have if I had been reading them on their release…so this one really got to me.

Even though this book came out a few years ago, it is still as relevant now as it was when it came out. Dealing with white supremacy, chemical warfare, the political climate – it truly is a scary, frightening read. It’s crazy how Karin Slaughter was able to take all that and weave it into her book, but she does so in such a captivating way – one in which keeps you completely captivated!

This was a wild ride, and I loved seeing how it all played out. There were some anxious moments when I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next and I found myself holding my breath, but I’ve come to expect that when reading these books. Nothing and no one is safe, and with Sara kidnapped and Will going undercover, it’s definitely an adrenaline-fueled ride to the end.

Audio thoughts:

Kathleen Early is the queen of narration for this series! She has nailed the voices and I don’t know what I’m going to do if they change the narrator. She brings consistency to each character and really gets the nuances of them. I have to make sure each time I select the audio book that it is Kathleen Early as the narrator…she really is the best!
