Summary:
Love: Matthew Brooks and Vanessa Lyons are a perfect match, both attorneys at a powerful New York City law firm. But there’s a small hitch: Matt just made partner, and Vanessa is coming up for partner next year. Two hitches, actually, because Vanessa is married.
Betrayal: Vanessa is assigned to the biggest case at the firm, the one that will determine her own partnership chances. Unfortunately, Matt has been working on the case for years, leaving him no choice but to supervise his lover in violation of firm policies. After the case is over, Vanessa’s ascendance is assured. But when Vanessa is denied her partnership, she can only assume that her affair with Matt was the reason.
Murder: in broad daylight, on a crowded Manhattan street corner. But with so many having been betrayed, will the true murderer be brought to justice? A gripping criminal trial will leave readers unsure of who, if anyone, is telling the truth. All culminating in the shocking final reveal.
My thoughts:
Somehow this was my first book by Adam Mitzner and I’m not sure why that is but this will definitely not be my last. It was a completely binge-worthy story that kept me on edge the entire time…I need more of these types of story in my life!
I forget how much I love legal thrillers…why don’t I read more of them? This was so perfectly pitched from the pacing to the expertly placed twists to the characters. I really had no idea how it was all going to end up and that is what I want in my thrillers! Having the story told from multiple perspectives works so well here and I love that we got snippets from court, too.
This one really kept me guessing the entire time. As the story moved forward, I was constantly changing my mind as to who was guilty and I just loved that. I also loved how the issue of lies and truth was touched on. How far would you go for those you love? Would you lie for someone you love?
This was such an addictive, smart read and I’m so glad I grabbed it. Now I can’t wait to dive into Mitzner’s backlist. If you’ve read his books, what do you think I should pick up next?
Audio thoughts:
This book translated so well onto audio. It was narrated by three narrators – Bronson Pinchot, Elizabeth Evans and Brian Hutchison – who did an amazing job bringing this story to life.
