Summary:
The Hunting Wives share more than target practice, martinis, and bad behavior in this novel of obsession, seduction, and murder.
Sophie O’Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet, and she’s feeling bored and restless.
Then she meets Margot Banks, an alluring socialite who is part of an elite clique secretly known as the Hunting Wives. Sophie finds herself completely drawn to Margot and swept into her mysterious world of late-night target practice and dangerous partying. As Sophie’s curiosity gives way to full-blown obsession, she slips farther away from the safety of her family and deeper into this nest of vipers.
When the body of a teenage girl is discovered in the woods where the Hunting Wives meet, Sophie finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation and her life spiraling out of control.
My thoughts:
This was this month’s Thriller by the Book Long Island’s book club pick. We had our book club meeting last night and while the book wasn’t exactly a hit, it did lead to some great discussions. I sometimes think those books are the best for book clubs actually!
The beginning of the book really dragged for me, and if it hadn’t been a book club pick, I probably would have stopped reading it. But, I was curious to see how things would play out and I was kind of digging the whole Desperate Housewives/Big Little Lies vibe this one had going on. And of course, there is the whole obsession theme that I really do like, but as far as everything else – that seemed a bit much. There weren’t many characters that were likable, which isn’t a hard no for me, but I’m talking about characters that are continually making bad choices and are just all-around awful people.
It does have a unique and original plot in some respects and I think that is what intrigued me but overall, this just wasn’t what I was hoping for.
Audio thoughts:
I did love the audio version of this book and that is what saved it for me. Erin Bennett’s narration was flawless and I’m glad she was the one narrating it. She did a great job bringing this story to life, giving just the right amount of emotion and tension to her voice as needed.
