Summary:

The Dropout meets Inventing Anna in this cinematic and page-turning summer read! A ripped-from-the-headlines story set in the glossy offices of Silicon Valley startups and NYC new media, Anna Bright Is Hiding Something explores our fascination with female founders breaking barriers—and sometimes behaving badly in the process.

Anna Bright is committing fraud. But nobody knows it yet. Not the board of her multibillion-dollar company, not her investors, not the public breathlessly anticipating the launch of BrightSpot, and not the media—including Jamie Roman, a hardworking journalist for BusinessBerry. But when Jamie does learn about Anna’s misconduct, she embarks on a bicoastal journey to expose the crimes and make a name for herself as a journalist. It’s not long before Anna learns what the reporter is up to, however—and she’ll do anything to stop Jamie.

Especially now that BrightLife’s IPO is days away.

My thoughts:

I became familiar with Susie Orman Schnall after reading a couple of her books, both of which were historical fiction. I loved that she was heading into new territory with this new book – and I’m so happy to say it was as good as it sounded!

This book grabbed me right from the beginning. Not only does the title offer a sense of intrigue, but that theme is then carried throughout the book to keep you on your toes. I love reading about strong, ambitious women and this one gives us two – one working as a CEO, trying to succeed at all costs and the other a journalist working to expose the truth.

This character-driven story really kept me engaged from the start. I loved how it was formatted, alternating between the two points of view. By allowing us to get the inner monologues of each of these women, it is easy to become quite invested in each of their stories. I loved being privy to their inner monologues, which gave us such insight into the type of person they really were.

This is such a timely, thought-provoking read. Yes, it is a page-turner with elements of suspense woven in, but it also explores the workplace and how females still aren’t treated fairly in many areas, especially in traditionally male-dominated workplaces like Silicon Valley and the media industry.

I highly recommend picking this one up – it’s highly readable and binge-worthy! Definitely one to throw in your beach bag this summer!

Audio thoughts:

I listened to this one and loved that there were two narrators, one for each of the main characters. Both Tiffany Bache and Hillary Huber did an amazing job bringing this story to life and made it very each to know which part I was listening to as each have such a distinct voice.

I like the character driven stories, irrespective if they are strong or weak.
