Summary:
A novel of terrible first impressions, hilarious second chances, and the joy in finding your perfect match.
Dr. Briana Ortiz’s life is seriously flatlining. Her divorce is just about finalized, her brother’s running out of time to find a kidney donor, and that promotion she wants? Oh, that’s probably going to the new man-doctor who’s already registering eighty-friggin’-seven on Briana’s “pain in my ass” scale. But just when all systems are set to hate, Dr. Jacob Maddox completely flips the game . . . by sending Briana a letter.
And it’s a really good letter. Like the kind that proves that Jacob isn’t actually Satan. Worse, he might be this fantastically funny and subversively likeable guy who’s terrible at first impressions. Because suddenly he and Bri are exchanging letters, sharing lunch dates in her “sob closet,” and discussing the merits of freakishly tiny horses. But when Jacob decides to give Briana the best gift imaginable—a kidney for her brother—she wonders just how she can resist this quietly sexy new doctor . . . especially when he calls in a favor she can’t refuse.
My thoughts:
As I make my way through Abby Jimenez’s books, I fall more in love with her writing and after finishing each new book, I feel like I have a new favorite! If you have followed me for any time here, you know that romance books aren’t my typical jam, but there is just something magical about this author’s books and I will read anything and everything Abby writes.
This is the second book in the Part of Your World series and of course I am late to the game with this series, but better late than never, right? The only good thing about coming to this series so late is that there are already three books out and I can move through them relatively quickly…as I have the time. Not only do I not read a lot of romance books, but I certainly do not read them back-to-back…but hopefully I’ll get to the next one in the next month or so.
I absolutely loved this one…not only did I find the characters so relatable, which is one of the things I love about Abby’s writing, but the way the romance blossomed between Briana and Jacob just won my heart over. The letters between the two was just about the cutest thing ever — and maybe it’s because my husband and I spent so much time apart during our first year dating that we relied on messaging as he isn’t much of a phone guy, but this really hit home for me. I also appreciated the mental health representation that Abby wove into the story – it is so organically done that it doesn’t come off as a plot trope at all.
I’m excited to continue on with this series and see who’s story we will be getting next as well as hoping to get to catch up with Briana and Jacob as the series progresses. After all…I live for character development and a series wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t see growth with characters we’ve already met, right?
Audio thoughts:
This book was brilliantly narrated by Kyla Garcia and Zachary Webber. Both do an amazing job bringing this story to life, infusing just the right amount of emotion and tension into their voices as needed.
