Audio-Book Virgin…Please Help!!!

At the end of this month, I am driving up to New Hampshire from New York by myself. I’ve done this drive many times, but thought that this time I would try listening to a book on tape.

The question is, having never listened to an audio-book before, do I get a book I have already read or do I go for something new?

I just finished reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett and have heard that the audio for the book is phenomenal. I could try that one, but if I can’t get it, what else should I look into?

Any and all suggestions are most welcome!!!

I think it depends on what you're looking for. If you absolutely loved a book but don't want to read it again-audiobooks are perfect. Or if you want a new book to listen to, that's perfect too.

I would defiantly recommend the audiobook for The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins-its amazing even if you've already read the book.

Also Sweethearts by Sara Zarr was another favorite of mine.

Well I love reading Audio Books, and for me it just depends on what mood I am in. But I love listening to cHristine Feehand's, or Jayne Ann Krentz's books on tape!!! But it depends on what your in the mood to listen to as well!!! Good Luck!!!

    Happy Listening!

I was struggling with the same thing. I think either way is great, but I opted for a book I hadn’t read before. I’m currently listening to Spells by Aprilynne Pike. Try to listen to a preview before buying so you can make sure the narrator’s voice works for you. I wanted Karen Marie Moning’s Beyond the Highland Mist but the narrator was horrible.

    Have a safe trip!

I actually love to listen to books that I already read. I always discover some new details when listening to books.
Especially the SEP books with Anna Fields (may she RIP) as the narrator are great. I also have a lot of audiobooks by Nora Roberts and really enjoy listening to them. And I love the audiobook version of "The Host".

Audio books are the perfect way to listen (read) books that you probably wouldn't read normally. I have found that they are perfect for classics that I just can't get into. The Outlander series is great to listen to anytime (it's long though) Love Jamey and Clarie

Hmmm a conundrum. First off, since you're the one who is doing the driving I would suggest something that will have you laughing or really, really scared. Either way, you're not going to fall asleep at the wheel!
That being said, you're also going to have to not be so into the book that you don't pay attention to the road, so said audio book shouldn't be too involved.
Sooooo… Chick-Lit, if you like that kind of novel, would be perfect. Something like MaryJanice Davidson's books or something to that calibre.
    I hope that that helped!

I listened to my first two books on audiobook this week – Pride and Prejudice (the review of which went up this morning) and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Although I can't compare, I would say listen to something that you have read before. When you are driving your mind has to be focused on the road, which will be easier to do if you are more familiar with the story.

Also, I found that my mind was a lot more likely to wander just listening rather than reading (an I think it would do the same even if it was a new book). I would rather have a wandering mind with a story I am famililar with than otherwise.

    Enjoy your trip

I listen to audio books while in the car frequently. Even for just short trips around town. I love them. I have also heard that The Help is really good on audio. I have it on the iPod but havent listened yet. I have already read the book and loved it.

My favorite audio book are Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier and the Piano Teacher by Janice Lee.

Maybe pick two so you can switch if you don't like the first.

I'm not sure if my comment went through or not yesterday, but everyone I know loves Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. They all say they are better on audio than to read.
