Summary:

When she was a child, Cassidy Pratt accidentally started a fire that killed her neighbor. At least, that’s what she’s been told. She can’t remember anything from that day, and her town’s bullies, particularly the cruel and beautiful Melody Davenport, have never let her live it down.

But then Melody goes missing, and Cassidy thinks she may have information. She knows she should go to the cops, but she recently joked about how much she’d like to get rid of Melody. She even planned out the perfect way to do it. And then she gets a chilling text from an unknown number: I’m so glad we’re in this together.

Now it’s up to Cassidy to figure out what really happened before the truth behind Melody’s disappearance sets the whole town ablaze.

My thoughts:

It’s not too often that I read YA and I’m not sure why because all the YA I’ve read to date I’ve really enjoyed and this one is no exception. This cover totally drew me in – isn’t it so creepy?

This is a fast-paced, YA thriller that is a bit dark but not the usual darkness that I typically encounter in the thrillers I tend to read – which doesn’t surprise me as again this is a YA book and not an adult novel. I loved that the entire time there is that question of did she or didn’t she – I love the unreliable narrator trope and never get tired of it – so for me, that really worked well here. Coupled with that we have teen angst and drama along with some romance, which for me, I could have done without that last part as I was more interested in the mystery but that’s just me.

Between the twists and turns and all the red herrings, I had no idea who the killer was until the very end and I loved that. This book is quite the addictive read and I flew through it in no time…I love books like that and while I was hoping for a more creepier read – I do get that it is a YA novel and so I’ll let that pass. It did have some creepy moments – I just wanted more. As a debut novel, it really is very good and I am quite eager to read more by this author!
