My thoughts: This is the second book I’ve read by Elle Marr and it was just as thrilling and twisted as I had hoped.
This book grabbed me from the beginning and it never really let up. It’s a dark, thrilling read that in some ways is similar to Emma Donoghue’s Room, but in other ways very different. I loved how it was told using flashbacks, with the present and the past weaving together to tell such a compelling story. The murders and the mystery really keep you on your toes and whether you are able to put the pieces together or not, you become completely engaged with these characters and are pulled into this emotional journey as Marissa works out just what is going on. Secrets that have been long buried come out and it is one chilling, tense read.
I love a book that challenges me to work through the clues, but sometimes I like to just enjoy the ride and that is what I did here. I found myself completely addicted to this story and ended up finishing it in a day – I just could not put it down. The family dynamics, the secrets, the trauma that this family lived through – it all worked together to keep me engaged and wondering what would come next.
This was a fast-paced, atmospheric, tense read. It is filled with questionable characters and just the right amount of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Definitely a great, addicting read.
Audio thoughts: I was pleased to see that Kate Rudd was narrating this one…she is one of my favorite narrators and I thought she did a great job with this audio. She did a great job with the voices, giving each character their own unique personality, allowing the story to come to life. Her pacing was spot on and her infused just the amount of tension and emotion into her voice as needed.
