Summary:

A heart-pounding tale of faith and family, with a devastating twist

“A great day is upon us. He is coming. The world will be washed away.”

On the wind-battered isle of Altnaharra, off the wildest coast of Scotland, a clan prepares to bring about the end of the world and its imminent rebirth.

The Adder is coming and one of their number will inherit its powers. They all want the honor, but young Eve is willing to do anything for the distinction.

A reckoning beyond Eve’s imagination begins when Chief Inspector Black arrives to investigate a brutal murder and their sacred ceremony goes terribly wrong.

And soon all the secrets of Altnaharra will be uncovered.

My thoughts:

This is the first book I’ve read by Catriona Ward and I was so excited when I got this one…I love gothic thrillers and thought I would really like this one but unfortunately it wasn’t quite what I was expecting.

I really had a hard time with this one. I must have started it a few different times, picking it up and putting it down because I just couldn’t get into it. I thought maybe it was because I had started it right before my trip and I was just too distracted by the excitement of finally going away – but even after trying again once I got home, I soon began to realize that it was more the book than me.

I love stories about cults and I did find that aspect of the story to be interesting. But overall I just didn’t connect fully with the story and the jumping around didn’t help. Perhaps I will revisit this one at another time, but for now, I’m just chalking it up to a not-me type of book.
