Mini Reviews: Thriller Edition #bookreviews #thrillers #minireviews

Thank you Viking Books, partner for the finished copy of Someone in the Attic and William Morrow Books, partner for the finished copy of This is Why We Lied in exchange for my honest reviews. I purchased the audiobook of This is Why We Lied for my collection.

These are two thrillers that I reviewed on my Instagram page the week they came out but realized I never shared the reviews here. One is a new-to-me author who is finally being published over here in the states and the other is the latest installment in a series I love!

SOMEONE IN THE ATTIC by Andrea Mara

Published: August 20, 2024 / Pamela Dorman Books

Summary:

You thought you were home alone.

Anya is enjoying a relaxing bath when she hears a noise coming from the ceiling. Through the open bathroom door, she sees the attic hatch swing down, and a masked figure drops to the floor. Thirty seconds later, Anya is dead.

You’re not afraid of being alone in the dark. You’re afraid you’re not alone.

Across town, Anya’s old school friend, Julia, sees an online video of a masked figure climbing out of an attic. She suddenly realizes why the footage is eerily familiar: it was filmed inside her house in a luxury gated community, designed to keep intruders out.

And now your worst fears are coming true.

Why would a stranger target Julia? Unless of course, it’s not a stranger at all.

My thoughts:

This book grabbed me right from the start and never let up! It’s all types of creepy, keeping me on edge and guessing as to who was behind the sinister goings-on. I thought I was sure I knew who it was and was totally off base! This book is chock full of twists and secrets & I couldn’t read it fast enough! ⁣

I am always a fan of things not quite being what they seem and this one was that and so much more! While most of the story is told in the present-day timeline, I loved the flashbacks that we occasionally got.

This is the author’s US debut and I sure hope her other books are released here soon because I want to read them!⁣ Besides being a really fantastic, creepy story, the writing is just phenomenal!

THIS IS WHY WE LIED by Karin Slaughter

Published: August 20, 2024 / William Morrow Books / HarperAudio

Summary:

The next thrilling suspense featuring Will Trent and Sara Linton from Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author of Pretty Girls and After That Night!

Everyone here is a liar, but only one of us is a killer…

A secluded cabin retreat

For GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton, McAlpine Lodge seems like the ideal getaway to celebrate their honeymoon. Set on a gorgeous, off-the-grid mountaintop property, it’s the perfect place to unplug and reconnect. Until a bone-chilling scream cuts through the night.

A murderer in their midst

Mercy McAlpine, the manager of the Lodge, is dead. With a vicious storm raging and the one access road to the property washed out, the murderer must be someone on the mountain. But as Will and Sara investigate the McAlpine family and the other guests, they realize that everyone here is lying….Lying about their past. Lying to their family. Lying to themselves.

Who killed Mercy McAlpine?

It soon becomes clear that normal rules don’t apply at McAlpine Lodge, and Will and Sara are going to have to watch their step at every turn. Trapped on the resort, they must untangle a decades-old web of secrets to discover what happened to Mercy. And with the killer poised to strike again, the trip of a lifetime becomes a race against the clock…

My thoughts:

This is the latest installment in the Will Trent series and I could not have loved it more. If you know this series, or even if you know this author, you know this is going to be a dark, disturbing book and it definitely is. The twists in this one were epic…the story is so tightly plotted I didn’t know how it was going to end and I loved every second of it, from the crazy family to the locked-room mystery of who killed poor Mercy. And as usual, we get plenty of time with Will and Sara, with Faith and Amanda showing up, too. This has become one of my favorite series and while this book can be read as a stand-alone, I highly recommend reading the series in order to really appreciate Will’s backstory as it pertains to this book. ⁣

Audio thoughts:

As I have for this entire series, I listened to this installment, which was narrated by Kathleen Early and she once again nails the performance! ⁣
