Summary:

In 1960s Florida, a young Cuban exile will risk her life – and heart – to take back her country in this exhilarating historical novel from the author of Next Year in Havana.

Beautiful. Daring. Deadly.

The Cuban Revolution took everything from sugar heiress Beatriz Perez – her family, her people, her country. Recruited by the CIA to infiltrate Fidel Castro’s inner circle and pulled into the dangerous world of espionage, Beatriz is consumed by her quest for revenge and her desire to reclaim the life she lost.

As the Cold War swells like a hurricane over the shores of the Florida Strait, Beatriz is caught between the clash of Cuban-American politics and the perils of a forbidden affair with a powerful man driven by ambitions of his own. When the ever-changing tides of history threaten everything she has fought for, she must make a choice between her past and future – but the wrong move could cost Beatriz everything – not just the island she loves, but also the man who has stolen her heart.

My thoughts:

This is the second book in the Cuba Saga series, or the Perez Family series as it’s also called. It’s both a series, and author, I’ve been meaning to read for quite some time and am really enjoying it so far.

This book is just as wonderful as Next Year in Havana and also brings to light more history about Cuba, which for me is a huge draw for this series. While the majority of the book is set in Florida this time around, there is still so much of the book that pulls from what is happening over in Cuba and I absolutely loved that. And we meet another of the Perez sisters, this time around Beatriz who is quite the spitfire. I immediately found myself captivated with her storyline and had a hard time putting this one down once I started. I love a good female spy and that is what happens here – Beatriz, in her quest for revenge for her brother’s death, finds herself recruited by the CIA to act as a spy on Fidel.

This book is full of intrigue, suspense and of course a bit of romance. The writing is once again so descriptive that you feel you are where the characters are – the scenes just have a way of coming to life and I am really coming to love that from this author.

I’m looking forward to continuing my time with the Perez Family and learning even more about Cuba. It’s a series I plan on taking my time with so as to savor each book and all the historical bits included with each story.

Audio thoughts:

Even though I had the print copy, I opted to listen to this one and loved the narration. There was just one narrator this time, Kyla Garcia, who was one of two narrators last time. I thought she did a fantastic job bringing this one to life.
