Summary:
The widows are back! Big hair and bigger lies collide in the highly anticipated follow-up to Audible’s best-selling Young Rich Widows, where nothing’s more dangerous than a widow with nothing left to lose.
Set in neon-drenched Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1987, just two years after a plane carrying four mafia-affiliated law-firm partners exploded over the Atlantic along with the cushy lives of their once wealthy wives. Now, Krystle fights to keep their fallen law firm afloat. Justine hustles as a lawyer-in-training. Meredith owns and operates the strip club where she once danced. And Camille orchestrates honey-pot schemes for scorned women–until one of her arrangements goes terribly wrong, and she becomes implicated in the debauched Mayor Tom’s mysterious murder in the champagne room. With everything on the line, the widows must join forces once more. But as the conspiracy unravels beyond the mayor’s demise, their search for justice pits first wife against second wife and widow against widow. With the widows’ fragile bond now tested, will the women cement their friendships, or is loyalty a luxury they just can’t afford?
In this thrilling expansion of the Widows universe, brimming with sloshed champagne, smeared lipstick, and lethal secrets, Desperate Deadly Widows unfolds as an edge-of-your-seat thriller where desperation wears stilettos, trust is a poker chip, and redemption comes at the cost of everything you thought you knew.
My thoughts:
The Widows are back and I could not be more excited!!! I absolutely loved the first book in this series, Young Rich Widows and so I was thrilled when I saw that this dynamic writing quartet was coming out with another fun outing with these widows…these stories are just the perfect blend of drama and mystery – oh and once again, the audio-only version is fantastic!!!
I think what I love most about this series is just how much drama we find amongst these women. The 1980s setting really comes into play with the big hair, stilettos and shoulder pads to give it a soap-opera feel, while also throwing in a murder to give it a little edge and tension. The wives are still coming to terms with all that happened in the first book – I won’t go into details so as to avoid spoilers in case you haven’t read that one yet…but seriously, if you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for???
These books are just plain fun. There’s plenty of 80s references that make me nostalgic for that time and the murder mystery showed just how far these women have come!
I cannot wait for another Widows book…I need more entertaining books like this in my life!
Audio thoughts:
I love that these books come out in audio form first and then are released in print version. I was also thrilled to see that the same narrators – Dina Pearlman, Karissa Vacker, Helen Laser and Ariel Blake – were back, each voicing the same character. I love that the choice was made to go with four different narrators instead of just one – it really makes this audiobook stand out in terms of engagement and how it plays. I hope that for however long the series goes on, these four narrators continue to be part of the series.
